Budapest – Baths

Hungary’s rich thermal waters have been prized for over 2000 years. Ever since the Romans discovered the benefits of the hot springs when they founded the ancient city of Aquincum (the ruins of which can be found in Budapest to this day,) the thermal waters have become renowned for their medicinal and health benefits. In the 1500’s the thermal baths became increasingly popular under the Ottoman rule and baths built within this era can still be found in Budapest today the Racz, Rudas, Veli Bej and Király baths.

The restorative waters of these baths can be attributed to Hungary’s location on the Carpathian Basin. The earth’s crust is at its thinnest, so water gathers more beneficial minerals as it travels to the surface. It’s no surprise therefore that in 1934, Budapest earned its title as the ‘International Spa City.’ There are currently around 15 public thermal baths (not including those that can be found in some luxury hotels) and 100 thermal springs within Budapest. To Hungarians ‘taking the waters’ is not a luxury, but an integral part of everyday life.
