St Stephen's Day Celebrations

Today Hungary celebrates St Stephen’s Day. A national holiday, the celebration commemorates the foundation of the Hungarian state and the first king of Hungary, Stephen I. The king laid the foundation of the state by converting the Magyar people to Christianity.

Events are held throughout the country to celebrate the national day, and it goes without saying that Budapest pulls out all the stops; there’s a special mass at St. Stephen’s Basilica, the procession of St. Stephen’s Holy Right Hand, open-air concerts, a “national cake” chosen, food stalls along the banks of the Danube, as well as a beautiful firework display over the Danube at night.
