With the annual F1 Grand Prix taking place in Hungary this weekend, we thought we’d share some tips on fun things to do in Budapest this summer…
1. Celebrate Saint Stephen’s Day (20th August)
St Stephen’s Day is a national holiday celebrating Hungary’s first king St. Stephen, as well as the foundation of Hungary. In Budapest there’s a special mass at St. Stephen’s Basilica, the procession of St. Stephen’s Holy Right Hand, open-air concerts, a “national cake” chosen, food stalls along the banks of the Danube, as well as huge fireworks over the Danube at night.
2. Festival of Folk Arts (20th-23rd August)
A famous festival where Hungarian folk arts and traditions are celebrated in the historic setting of Buda Castle. The Festival of Folk Arts is a must-see summer event between the 20th and 23rd of August. The main goal of the festival has remained the same for nearly three decades: to present very rare but existing crafts thanks to creative minds and hardworking people from the past. 3. Sziget Festival (10th - 17th August)
One of Europe’s most popular music festivals, Sziget Festival attracts revellers from all over the world to the Island of Freedom. Seven days of huge headliners, music of all genres and extravagant entertainment. It’s an unforgettable experience. More information here
4. The Budapest Summer Festival (All Summer)
The Budapest Summer Festival is a concert series that tales place in an open air venue in Margaret Island. The series of ballet, opera, musicals and art performances take place each weekend for three months over the summer. Check out what is on the calendar here
5. Budapest Baths (All Summer)
And of course, no trip to Budapest would be complete without a visit to one of many baths in the city! The ‘oh so famous’ Bath Parties take place in the summer – we recommend visiting one of the most popular baths in the city, the Szechenyi Baths and Pool. You can book tickets here
