Today Hungary celebrates St Stephen’s Day. A national holiday, the celebration commemorates the foundation of the Hungarian state and the first king of Hungary, Stephen I. The king laid the foundation of the state by converting the Magyar people to Christianity.

Events are held throughout the country to celebrate the national day, and Budapest is no different. In the city a number of celebrations are organised: mass at St. Stephen’s Basilica, open-air concerts, a “national cake”, food stalls along the banks of the Danube, an evening firework display over the Danube and the procession of St. Stephen’s Holy Right Hand.

How will you be celebrating St Stephen’s Day?
